Call us, helplines urge troubled teens

1a) List two reasons why teens are reluctant to call helplines despite the promise of anonymity and professional help.

b) According to Ms Lily Chu, how does Touch Leadership and Mentoring prefer to help troubled teens?

2) Have you confided in your friends or family members about the problems you face in school/ life? Why or why not?

Have you been betrayed by your friends before? If yes, how? (You may change the names of the people involved for privacy)

Students from secondary 3 to 4 would mostly choose not to confide n those who are not close to them or strangers as they also find it very wimpy to call . And at these age students would most likely to be look cool , looked experienced ,worldly wise and unfazed by anything is their main objective these are the two reasons why teen are reluctantto call helplines despite the anonymity and professional help . According to Ms Lily Chu they prefer to help youths by a more direct , effective means , through programmes like workshops in schools , face to face counselling and home visits . I have confided in my parents of my family and close friends in schools about the propblems i face in school . It is because it is just like the newspaper mentioned those of our age would not ever confide in those that are not really close to us as we have no relationship with them and do not find the needs to talk to them . So hotlines offered by those counselling programmes teenagers like us would not use the contacts listed or provided by them . Yes i have been betrayed by my friends before , i thought that we could really be good and trusted friends and he would be able to help me keep a secret but in the end it turned out i was wrong to have made that kind of assumption . Not only did he divulge my secret but mede my other friends turn against me . So i have been cruelly betrayed as a friend whom i thought i can be close with .

PM's 4 BASIC RULES FOR RELIGIOUS HARMONY

1a) What are the 4 rules for religious harmony?

b) In your opinion, how can we maintain a common space in schools?

2) Do you respect other religions? Why or why not? What do you think of children who stay away from their parents' funerals because they believe the traditional rites are against their new religion?

The 4 rules are all groups have to exercise tolerance and restraints , keep religion seperate from politics , government must remain secular , maintain the common space that all singaporeans share . Schools have many activites like in schools celebating racial harmony day in each year , hold special events , activites and community involvement projects which help all ethnic groups open a space of communcation to bring about special relationship and frinedships . all these events and activities help bring people of all races to be more united together . all these are the common spaces in schools that students of all races can get to work study and play together . I do respect other religions , it is because many people believe in different religon if all people were to be so selfish then the very thing that keep singaporeans united together would be lost and spark off many dangerous events like racial riots so that why we celebrate racial harmony day together in commemoration of that day. I think that they are just trying to be a honest to their religion or that they did not want thier children to get affected by their parents death so they did not attend the funeral . I feel that kinship is more important than being a religious believers as if they were to believe so much in their new religion then they should at least allow them to attend the funeral so as to see their beloved once more and not because of the new religion to prevent it . So children should be given a chance to for once see their kin so that religions could learn to accept each other .

1a) What was the reason for building the platform doors at the MRT stations?

b) Which other countries already have such doors installed at train stations?

2) What is your opinion of commuters on trains who disregard the rules (no eating/drinking, give up seats for the elderly/ the disabled/ pregnant women etc.) on the train?

The reason for building the platform doors at the MRT stations is to prevent more commuters to purposely or otherwise accidentally from falling onto the MRT tracks . As case study says that the number of people falling on the tracks are on the rise . Other countries such as Paris and Taipei are currently seen using these doors . My opinion of commuters on train who disregard the rules are some of those people who are incosiderate and selfish as they do not think of other people but themselves . As they bring food and drink on board to eat and drink which could lead others to think that the rules are not important and should not be abided to . Others who see the sign but do not make way for those who are the elderly , disabled or pregnant women have not thought about how difficult it would be if it were them as they have not put themselves in their shoes . So basically they would not know the difficulty and create a mess which would be more of a hassle . People who are like those are should learn to think of the others more often .

Sec 3 E/ N(A) Straits Times Reflection Week 6

Sec 3 E/ N(A) Straits Times Reflection Week 6

Article: “Government acts to curb younger smokers” (Pg A1 & A4)

Questions:

1. What are some measures by the government to curb smoking?

2. How successful do you think these measures would be?
Support your answer with reasons.

Some of the measures are to increase the fines for underage smoking , giving ban on the certain sales of tobacco and also barring some places from selling them , lower the rate of permitted nicotine and tar allowed in the cigarettes. These could further reduce the number of people smoking not just in the public places and also in smoking restricted areas . Because of this some smokers will have to curb it as the sales of cigarettes have been lowered and now not any nearby minimarts as ban as the banning and barring of the cigarettes have led many smokers to have trouble purchasing it . now that the sales of cigarettes could increase due to the governments ban cigarettes can now be sold at hih prices but even after purchasing it smokers will still not be enjoying it for long as the lowered level in the nicotine have made cigarettes less of what its contents used to be and thus some might quit it as they no longer find it and interest and hard to get as they now have to go through all the trouble just to get a box of cigarettes to smoke . I would say that it would be quite a success as many smokers would find trouble to smoke more and more often which would really further reduce the numbers of smokers and second hand smoking .

A Deadly Business

1a) What are 2 worrying trends about drug trafficking mentioned in the article ?

b) Why are Singaporeans increasingly being used as " drug mules "?

2a) What will you do if you find out that one of your friends is selling drugs ?
How will you react if someone tries to sell drugs ?

The two worrying trends are that not just adult men are the ones drug trafficking but also women and teenagers are an danger of getting caught by the police for drug tracfficking . the second worrying trend would be that more and more other singaporeans are arrested overseas for their crimes for drug trafficking . It is because singaporens do not need a visa when going to most places and they are also less likely to be checked because of its reputation for having a strong opposition against drugs so it becomes easier for them to get used by people overseas to help imort over the drugs so as to make quick and easy money . Which is the reason why there is and increase of singaporeans caught acting as drug mules . The first thing i will do is to tell and stop my friend from continuing selling the drugs . Then talk them into confessing with the police by surrrendering himself . If i know the person i would approach and try to stop him then tell him and hopefully he would not do it again . But if it were to happen then i would tell him the serious and heavy punishment about drug trafficking hopefully he will tremble when he heard it and finally stop doing it again . I would definitely be shocked and appalled if it were someone i knew but if i do not know the person then i would at least try to persuade them into stop doing the same thing again and again .

sec 3E Sttraits Times Blogging WEEK 4

Sec 3E EL Straits Times Blogging WEEK 4

Refer to the “in” Section

1) Pg 4: Her world’s a stage

Reflection Questions:

Do you consider yourself an artistic person?

What are your opinions of the theatre scene in Singapore?

2) Pg 10: Drink-and-Eat MRT Riders on the rise

Reflection Question:

How do you feel about MRT commuters eating and drinking blatantly on the train?

I do not not consider myself an artistic person as i do not know how to draw , paint and play musical instruments . I also do not think that i am quite artistic myself . I feel that its good as many people can learn a think or two just by observivg an art piece in the museum or by going to the musical theatre to watch a play which displays moral values . All this helps families get together and creates family times and moments to share with one and another to enjoy . I feel that those MRT commuters are inconsiderate as they only think about themselves and do not think how others feel as people like them do not abide by the rules . they do not feel ashamed but very thick skinned instead because they know about the sign which say no bringing of food in the train . they also feel that they are very rich as they do not care about the the heavy fines which are being imposed on them .therefore they are inconsiderate and rich but thick skinned .

ST Reflection Semester 2 week 1

1a) Why is cheerleading an expensive sport ?

b)What makes cheerleading such a tough sport?

2) What is your opinion of cheerleaders ? If given a chance , would you join cheerleading ? Why / Why not ?

It is because the hair products costs about $5o for a competition , medical insurance of $30 to $100 for each person , nutritional supplements costs about $50 to $130 per bottle , tailored costumes for new competition seasons which costs $100 to $400 each as tailors hired mostly are from thailand , gymnastics classes and workshops which costs $50 per session weekly for an hour and a half as some coaches make in it compulsory to attend , their tights costs about $2 to $5 , training mats costs $50 per piece and branded shoes imported from united states and taiwan which costs $90 to $150. In total it would cost a boom as such amount needed for this sport . Cheerleaders have must attend training sessions which are made compulsory so that they would not miss out and in the event of a competition not do well, they too have to be co-ordinated so as to show temwork and be presentable to the judges which could be real tiring to do and their competition are quiet frequent so they need lots of time to practice and keep fit . My opinion of cheerleaders is that they are all very rich and very fit like muscular and brave as they have to perform dangerous stunts that may hurt them. given a chance i would not join cheerleading because of its many disadvantages and its high costs .

Term 2 Week 5 (20th April)

Article: “I was an addict” – ‘Straits Times IN’ Section (In The Air Pg 2)

1a) What are some of the earliest signs mentioned in the article to indicate that a person is addicted to gaming?

1b) State some of the methods listed by the author to overcome the addiction to gaming.

2) What are some of your reactions after reading this article? If a close friend of yours confesses to you that he/she is addicted to online games, what would your advice to him/her be?

First he or she would start to skip meals and lost sleep , calling themselves by their avatar name , have constant urge for things that the gamer is crazy over , talk about the game all the time and alsobegin to imagine things . Find some balance by going outdoors more often than staying at home instead of spending time on the computer lock to the chair in the room facing it the whole day , lock the computer so that she would not even go try to use it , start to socialise more often by talking more with the friends in school and also have friends who would constantly remind her not to game . I feel that it is easy for anyone to get addicted to computer gaming as it ie very addictive. If i can use my computer all day , i would just forget all bout the time in the world and be buey gaming the whole day immediately right after school . And constant urge to use the computer will fill my mind like mad and would be tempted to rush home so that i could quickily use the computer the first thing i do when i first reach home . If a close friend of mine confesses that he or she is an addicted online gamer than i would advise him or her to spend more time outdoors as it helps to keep the gamer away from the computer so he would not have the constant urge , tall him the bad effects of gaming like being addicted as he already is and also like he would spoil his eyesight sooner or later and also tall him to quit gaming while he should can if he is going to find it quite hard to get rid of the habit .

Article: “Mum’s Term 2 Week 4 (13th April)
catching up with me … on Facebook”– ‘Home’ Section (Pg B2)

1) What were the reasons given by Facebook parent, Rashida Husian, when she requests access to the networking sites and also to what her children had put online?

2) Do you think it is a good idea to accept requests by your parents to add them readily to your friends’ list on the Facebook? Why?

Keeping track of her children and their friends and keep in touch with them are the reasons given by facebook parent ,when she requests access to the networking sites and also to what her children had put online . Yes i do think so it is a good idea to accept requests by your parents to add them readily to your friends' list on the facebook. It is because facebook is a website like blogs where you can express your feelings and when your parents know about it they would know what to do and they could help you when you have troubles in your heart like offering you advice to give you a better decision to make . When you need a listening ear or someone to talk to then they would always be there to help talk to you no matter how busy they are . It also serves as a line of communication where you can chat or ask anything just like sms . It is there as it makes our lives better and it could help us in many areas . So we should be happy to add our parents on our facebook friends' list as it could be of more use then harm especially when we need them the most .
Week 1Article: “Tuition Crazy” – ‘IN’ Section

Question 1: State any two reasons mentioned by students why extra tuition was necessary.

Question 2: Do you think it is necessary for you to have tuition? Why?

So that they can score better for their results and also as they need more attention in class for their particular result . I thinkits neccessary for me to have tuition as when i have anything that i am unclear in class , when i go tuition then i could ask the teacher over there too for answers and explanations on how to do that particular subjects or questions and also take it as an extra supplementary lesson to help myself cope better in class . It would also allow me to have more exposure on the weak subjects that i am not good in . When i m having tuition i also get to meet my friends and hang out around with them . tuition acts as another school session just that we have it at different places and at different time of the day . And it also gives us more time and practise for our upcoming exams so that we would not feel the pressure of the exams when the times comes . So i think that it is neccessary for me to have tuition .
